Belsnickel is a character from German folklore, particularly associated with the Christmas traditions of the Palatinate region. The name "Belsnickel" is derived from the Middle High German "belzen," meaning "to wallop" or "to drub," and "Nickel," which is a diminutive form of the name Nicholas. Belsnickel is often portrayed as a companion to St. Nicholas, the traditional gift-bringer in many European cultures. Belsnickel is a Christmas figure from German and Pennsylvania Dutch tradition. He appears as a rough, ragged man dressed in fur or old clothes, carrying a switch and a bag of treats. Belsnickel visits homes before Christmas to test children. If they behave well, he rewards them with candies or nuts. If they are naughty, he warns or lightly taps them with his switch to remind them to behave. | Terrifying Earth
